Colortron

Article Abstract:

Light Source Computer Images' $1,195 Colortron is an excellent color spectrometer that accurately measures color as spectral data to maximize color consistency from the desktop PC to the printer or printing press. Maximizing color quality requires matching colors throughout the design and output process. This is difficult when various devices use incompatible color measurement models such as CMYK and RGB. The only exact way to ensure consistency is to define colors as spectral data. Colortron consists of a device that attaches to a Mac's ADB or serial port and is placed on top of the color sample to be measured. The sampled color data can be expressed in such color formats as RGB, CIE, PMS (Pantone Matching System), HSB and CMYK as spot or process colors. Testing of the Colortron's color matching capability showed it to be accurate. The device's impressive color software, testing of the system, and the few minor weak points are discussed.

Article Abstract:

A color management system attempts to match original colors with the colors shown onscreen, on the proof, and on the final printout. Until recently, such a comprehensive match was not possible. The emergence of standard file formats for device profiles have enabled vendors to describe the characteristics of their color peripherals in a standard way. Most device profiles now use the CIE color standard to represent the behavior of various devices. Apple now includes color management in its operating system. Under Windows 3.1, however, color management must still be applied at the application level. Under Windows 95, users can access the Image Color Matching system, which is similar to Apple's ColorSync technology and works at the operating system level. Other technologies, such as handheld spectrophotometers, can also be used to achieve a high degree of color uniformity.

Article Abstract:

It is possible to create a consistent color match for figures such as company logos across the wide spectrum of of media such as print, product packaging, television ads, mall kiosks and Web page. The radical workflow of using RGB throughout most of the color correction and prepress process rather than the traditional CMYK is proposed. The majority of desktop scans are saved in RGB file. Also, Adobe 5 lets one specify a wide range of RGB space instead of the limited RGB space of the monitor, Apple ColorSync permits the use of a calibrated RGB monitor and RGB color information can be sent to a digital press and connected copier and have the RIP apply color management.
