Creative directors and art directors scramble to find their seats in the publishing industry

Article Abstract:

Publishing houses are expanding the definition of art director to include design director services in a climate of downsizing. Meanwhile, the art directors who are occasionally asked to step up to become creative directors often decide to forego the salary increase and prestige to keep hands-on design work. A rundown of the types of career moves to be expected among designers and directors in the magazine and book publishing fields is provided.

Double feature: winners at the 75th Annual Art Directors Show

Article Abstract:

Two winners of the 1996 Art Directors Best of Show in Advertising have received contracts to use their material in films. The 'Cheat' campaign from Guess? will be made into a film producted by Panda Productions and Great Guns Films in fall 1996. Graphic arts winner Kyle Cooper of R/GA Digital Studios for the 'Seven' campaign will design and direct end titles in a thriller from Line Cinema.

J@p@n initiates the world's first International Graphic Design Competition held on the Internet

Article Abstract:

Japanese graphic designers Masuteru Aoba and Shigeo Fukuda have started the first worldwide graphic design competition on the Internet. The competition is designed to encourage new graphic designers to contribute to the field. An international panel of judges will look at an unlimited number of entries in Nov 1996 to determine nine major prices, including a Grand Prix of $20,000.
