Data mining unmasked

Article Abstract:

Data mining has to do with mathematical analysis of large volumes of customer data, such as demographics, credit histories, product preferences, transactions, and click-stream patterns, to identify patterns and trends. Data mining is a much deeper sort of analysis than real-time online analytics, also known as collaborative filtering. Opinions differ about the value of data mining, but one objection to it is being loudly vocalized. Tying the data to the habits and preferences of a particular customer generates anxiety among people concerned about personal privacy.

Building rapport, building sucess

Article Abstract:

Relations between creative groups and IT professionals should be nurtured, whether IT is handled in-house or outsourced. IT staffers need to be turned into allies, not adversaries. Business managers should familiarize themselves with IT lingo, and about available technologies. Managers should not assume that IT is intimately aware of business needs or is informed about related technologies.
