Deep in the heart of Texes: multiply your PC's typesetting skills with Micro Tex and PC Tex

Article Abstract:

Tex, which is a typesetting program that was originally written for mainframe computers, now appears in two manifestations for the PC: PC Tex from Personal Tex; and Micro Tex from Addison-Wesley. Both had to be tested for compatibility with the original in order to bear the Tex name, so differences between them (which are detailed) are minor. Tex is for those who feel that the typographical restrictions of page layout programs force compromises in the appearance of finished work; Tex is especially useful for technical or mathematical work. Tex uses codes that give a user precise control over placement and appearance of characters on a page. However, Tex uses hundreds of codes; therefore, the program can be difficult to learn. This problem can be partly overcome by using 'macros', single commands that can trigger a series of codes.

Putting in your two cents worth

Article Abstract:

For Comment (single-author version $195; multiuser version $995) is a manuscript-revision program from Broderbund Software Inc. The program requires 256Kbytes, two disk drives, and DOS 2.0 or later. For Comment allows up to 16 users to add comments and revisions to manuscripts. A variety of word processors are supported including Wordperfect, Wordstar, and Microsoft Word. The program also accepts ASCII files. Comments or changes, which can be added to a shared disk, phoned by modem, or exchanged via various local area networks, are compiled into a file along with a copy of the original manuscript. Documentation is extensive, but straightforward.
