Three color separation software packages for the Macintosh are evaluated: Aldus PrePrint 1.5.1 from Aldus Corp, ReadySetGo from Manhattan Graphics Corp, and SpectreSeps QX from Pre-Press Technologies Inc. Three MS-DOS compatible packages are also evaluated: Publisher's Prism from InSight Systems Inc, Ventura Separator from Ventura Software Inc, and HiJaak ColorSep from Inset Systems Inc. SpectreSeps QX XTension for QuarkXPress and the Ventura Separator extension for Ventura Publisher for Windows are additions to common layout programs. HiJaak ColorSep, Publisher's Prism and Aldus PrePrint for the Mac are stand-alone programs that separate PostScript files printed to disk from page layout programs. ReadySetGo, priced at $395, is the only page layout program currently available that does its own separations. Tips for doing color separations include using the best equipment for the job, obtaining experienced consultation, using the right service bureau, getting organized from the beginning, use color proofs to judge color, testing separations on the output device, refrain from compressing the data, and expect the unexpected.

SpectreSeps QX XTension with QuarkXPress: extended capabilities

SpectreSeps QX 1.0.3, from Pre-Press Technologies Inc, is a $495 utility for color publishing with professional capability. System requirements include a Macintosh with System 6.03 and 3Mbytes RAM. SpectreSeps QX gives the ability to print process-color separation to the QuarkXPress 3.0 program. Imported scanned-images can be processed as well as modified. The combination of the two packages offers the color tools of QuarkXPress for adjusting contrasts and color components plus additional tonal balance controls and generic correction settings for scanners. There are no controls for halftone screen frequency, angle or dot shape. Documentation has no explanation of how the program works, although it does explain how to use the extension. The lack of explanation makes it difficult to mix custom settings for best advantage or to adjust the controls effectively.

Avnet Computer Technologies' ACTI 4-5-6 ($9,456) desktop publishing turnkey system is simple to set up and comes with the scanner, a graphics package, and Ventura Publisher and Media Cybernetics Halo DPE page makeup software. Upgrades are available with registration of the software. Avnet offers its customers technical support for its whole system. The print controller for the Jlaser Plus PC AT is sold separately by Tall Tree Systems for $699. Software programs that do not include the Jlaser Plus printer controller will not print and Avnet's system will not run on other computers.
