Experiment in color

Article Abstract:

The QMS Colorscript 100 Model 10, 20, and 30; Oce Graphics' B5232 Color PostScript Printer; Tektronix Phaser CP and Howtek Pixelmaster PostScript compatible color printers were reviewed in terms of cost, compatibility with Adobe fonts, and quality of printed image. The Pixelmaster was the least expensive printer reviewed, but also the least capable. The Phaser CP produced the sharpest images and the brightest colors, qualities which made it the best printer for presentation materials. Compatibility with Adobe-licensed fonts, 300 dpi print quality, and ability to print tabloid pages are features shared by the G5232 Color Postscript Printer and the QMS Colorscript 100 Models, however, the QMS models are less expensive and designed better. The QMS 100 lists at $15,995 for the Model 30, $12,995 for the Model 20 and $9,995 for the model 10. The QMS line of printers were the most highly recommended.

Both sides now: HP Laserjet IID

Article Abstract:

HP's $4,295 laser printer, the HP Laserjet IID, is highly recommended as an excellent printer for its duplex-printing abilities. The IID has a clever paper-path design that allows two-sided documents to be printed straight out of the printer without hand-feeding and does so flawlessly. Added features include 14 built-in fonts and 10 more on a cartridge, a second 200-sheet paper tray, printing up to 16,000 pages per month and an optional $350 automatic envelope feeder. The IID has 640K of memory, which can be increased to 4.6Mbytes with optional memory boards. Consecutive printing from three input trays is possible, and the IID can rotate type in 90-degree increments while maintaining compatibility with the Series II.
