Determining the right grid to use as a base for a layout makes it easier to produce a newsletter, magazine, or periodical and gives a consistent appearance throughout. The first step in designing the page grid is to analyze the project by reading the text to see its pace and voice, decide who the reader is, and how and by whom the piece will be produced. Four, five, or six column grids offer more ways to present stories and articles. One, two, and three column grids are too confining. Use dummy articles to test various combinations of the grid. Finally, use real articles to test the grid. An underlying grid limits layout choices, making it easier to produce better results.

US pork company acquires French meats plant

Article Abstract:

US-based pork producer Smithfield Foods has acquired France's Societe Bretonne de Salaisons (SBS), an own-label producer, in a move aimed at expanding Smithfield's presence in Europe. Smithfield is the largest vertically integrated pork and processed meat producer in the US with 1996 sales reaching almost $3.9 billion. SBS sells mostly to France's retail grocery chains and has sales of some $115 million.
