Growing the megasite: National Geographic Online

Article Abstract:

National Geographic Online is the National Geographic Society's World Wide Web 'megasite' that covers content related to National Geographic, Traveler, and World magazines. The site's editor Mark Holmes notes that the multimedia site is produced by and caters to the 18-34-year-old demographic that the Society's membership has had trouble recruiting. Holmes notes that the new medium goes beyond marketing or repurposing of print content to offer new interactive modules, but he also describes the difficulty of finding editorial and design content at the standards held by the print magazines.

A focus on the Web: @tlas

Article Abstract:

@tlas is an exiting World Wide Web site for photojournalism. The site attracts hard-hitting photographs, which according to creative director Olivier Laude no longer have much of a traditional market. @tlas also features exotic graphics, an international orientation, and innovative multimedia gizmos. The images are presented alone without advertising with a very small budget, unlike such sites as Hotwired and Salon.
