Where do you draw the line?

Article Abstract:

Attendees at a fall 1996 Art Directors Club symposium discussed the responsibility advertisers have in curtailing their messages to suit the perceived good of society. FCB/Leber Katz Senior VP Laurel Cutler justified tobacco advertising over the years by pointing out that advertisers are in the business to make money and cannot be expected to turn down jobs. Mike Salisbury, creator of the Joe Camel cartoon caracter featured in the Camel cigarette ads that provoked interest in tobacco ad regulation, also agrees that moral responsibility should not primarily fall to advertisers.

Fade to white: why African-Americans don't go into advertising

Article Abstract:

Advertising industry observers explain the reasons why there are so few African Americans present in creative departments of US advertising agencies. Although there are a few scattered scholarships, African-Americans receive little encouragement early on in their education. Separate African-American agencies are effective at catering to the separate information needs of the African-American community.

You want to advertise where?

Article Abstract:

Advertisers are pushing the boundaries of where they advertise. Ads are appearing on sidewalks, construction site broadsheets, subway car interiors, bus sides, the sky, and restrooms. Ads are even creeping into the once-immune workplace, with such items as screen saver ads produced by Pointcast Inc. in California.
