Image editing

Article Abstract:

Adobe Photoshop can be used for special effects such as creating letters that appear as if they are made with a three-dimensional drawing program. The user can employ two filters and a simple mask to instruct Photoshop to bend a background image around the letter surfaces, as well as to instruct it to calculate highlights and shadows. The Lighting Effects and Displace filters enable creating a photo-realistic effect. The user must first create the text in a separate mask channel to make use of the filters, by choosing Show Channels from the Windows menu and creating the text to be embossed by selecting the type tool from the tool bar. The next step is to duplicate the text mask into a separate file to satisfy the Displace filter. A neutral layer is then created for the Lighting Effects menu by returning to the RGB view and choosing Fill from the Edit menu. The user then chooses Render from the Filter menu and selects Lighting Effects form the submenu.

Clipping paths of perfection

Article Abstract:

Step-by-step instructions for creating layered soft image transitions behind vector objects using clipping paths are presented. Clipping paths are used by object-oriented programs to determine what is opaque and what is transparent in a vector image, but are time-consuming to draw and are always sharp and discrete. Creating effects that overcome the 'hard edge' limitations of clipping paths is a two-part process requiring both an image editor and an illustration or page layout program. The user first meticulously prepares the artwork in Photoshop and selects the exact portion to clip before sending it to a new background layer, switching layers and filling it with the desired color. A skilled artist will want to draw the clipping path by tracing around the edge of the masked image layer using the Pen tool, but Photoshop can generate paths automatically. Illustrator 4.0 is then used to layer the objects and heighten the effect.
