Article Abstract:

Expanding an Internet strategy to include a worldwide audience involves both translating and localizing a Web site. In translating, the human element must be relied on because machine translation is only about 60 percent accurate. A translation must also be webified, which means translating it again into HTML. And finally, a site has to be localized, which means time differences, currency exchanges and matters involving culturally appropriate information must be taken into account. According to market researcher International Data Corp (IDC), more than 50 percent of today's 147 million Web users are non-English speakers, and by 2003, 60 percent of one billion Internet users will be non-English speakers.

Rally 'round

Article Abstract:

Martin Clayton, general manager of interactive media at country.com, says visitors are drawn to the site because of its mix of music, motorsports, hunting and fishing. Many of the site's visitors are what research company Arbitron calls 'streamies,' by which it means they are Internet users who want streaming audio and video. Streaming media has adopted streaming media and has already moved on to the next technological step which involves live webcasts of news, and more recently, special events.

News at the source

Article Abstract:

News feeds provide a convenient way to add content to a Web site, but users should be aware that such content can be questionable. Ethical guidelines are lacking, and some online journalists are not as they should be careful about gathering and sourcing Internet misinformation. Industry observer Esther Dyson says bad reporting is likely decline as users become more familiar with the Internet and it becomes clear that some services are more reliable than others.
