Infini-D 3.0

Article Abstract:

Specular International Ltd's Infini-D 3.0 is an inexpensive 3D application that provides several high-end features. Infini-D provides excellent animation features and spline-based modeling, which makes it easy to create smooth objects for animation. There are two methods of modeling: lathing, which is used to create radially symmetric objects; and path extrusion, which takes an outline and runs it along predefined splines. Infini-D lacks character animation and animation hierarchies, which would make it a complete animation solution. This version includes onscreen motion paths for animation and a visible Velocity Curve option that enables the user to see how parameters change in the animation. Texture Decaling applies texture to an exact spot on the surface of a model. The list price for Infini-D 3.0 is $899, upgrades are available for $179.

Macromedia Extreme 3D

Article Abstract:

Macromedia's $699 Extreme 3D combines the company's Macromedia Three-D with MacroModel. The result is a package with outstanding animation and modeling abilities. Extreme 3D also includes high-end capabilities such as volumetric lighting. On the negative side, Extreme 3D's interface needs to be strengthened, and the product would benefit by adding cross-platform support and more features. At least a Macintosh 040 is required, with 16MB of system memory, 20MB of hard-drive space and System 7.1. Alternatively, use a 486 PC with 16MB of system memory and Microsoft's Windows 3.1. Macormedia Extreme 3D is recommended and receives a rating of four stars out of a possible five.
