Many bridges to cross

Article Abstract:

The $295 Ventura DataBase Publisher (VDBP) 4.0 and $295 InfoPublisher data base publishing software packages from, respectively, Ventura Software Inc and PageAhead Software Corp are not simple to learn but radically simplify the process of turning Xbase raw data into formats suitable to desktop publishing and word processing programs. Previously, the conversion of data into files suitable for use with such programs required a profound knowledge of the data base's programming language. The data base publishing software packages handle the fetching, manipulation and porting of data to publishing and word processing programs. InfoPublisher features include query-by-example data selection, manipulation and formatting of data with spreadsheet-like tables and support for PageMaker 4.0 and the MS-DOS versions of Microsoft Word and WordPerfect. VDBP employs icons and dialog boxes to control the process and outputs to Ventura Publisher, PageMaker 4.0, Windows versions of Word and WordPerfect, and Ami Pro. Add-in data base publishing utilities for QuarkXPress for the Mac and PageMaker are briefly discussed.

VideoFusion 1.5, COSA After Effects

Article Abstract:

VideoFusion's $649 VideoFusion 1.5 and the Company of Science and Art's $1,295 COSA After Effects operate on QuickTime and are the best video tools available for film and video animators not working on video workstations. VideoFusion, ideal for beginners, includes functions that allow the user to flip, roll and rotate live-action movies, create composites of separate stills or films, posterize or color map, perform image processing functions, and morph images from the same or separate clips. Unfortunately, VideoFusion forces the user to compile manually individual special effects of each film and all films have only one keyframe, or starting point. COSA After Effects will produce broadcast quality animation with capabilities to import unlimited still frames and QuickTime movies, negotiate alpha channels, create anti-aliased composites, touch up existing films, superimpose one or more films on top of another, change resolution while designing, work with field rendering and set up multiple keyframes.
