Making it big

Article Abstract:

Large-scale graphic productions, such as billboards or bus murals, can be produced with ordinary desktop publishing software and a large-format output device. Still, small-format designers must make some artistic and production-oriented adjustments in order to move to large-format projects. The most popular type of large-format printer is a wide-carriage inkjet. Color matching is more difficult on these types of printers. Paper used by these inkjets use a topcoat to control ink adhesion and improve drying time, and this material needs to be taken into account in the color matching process. Large posters can often look good at lower resolutions, which will save a considerable amount of printing time. It is important to keep in mind how the poster will be viewed. For some applications, such as building murals or transit shelter posters, a large electrostatic printer with vinyl sheet output may be the best solution.

Who's demanding On Demand?

Article Abstract:

Xerox's DocuColor 40 digital color production system was a focus of attention at the On Demand trade show, held in spring 1996, in New York. Even though there is excitement in the market for systems for full-color print runs of a few dozen to a few thousand copies, however, few companies are making money at digital short-run printing. About 600 Indigo E-Print 1000s are installed worldwide, and AM Multigraphics, which distributes the Xeikon DCP-1 in the US, reports about 500 DCP-1s installed. Agfa has installed 200 Chromapresses, and Heidelberg has a backlog of 385 orders for its Quickmaster DI. At seminars, service providers were encouraged to educate customers about uses for short-run digital color and to market to customers' specific needs.
