No more alternatives: Kenyan government enforces newspaper conduct code

Article Abstract:

The views provided by the Kenya governments regarding the publications like the Weekly Citizen, Kenya Confidential as unsubstantiated, scandalous reports on prominent personalities of the government, various associations were introduced to remove the unethical journalism. The Kenya Union of Journalists helped the press to provide sound editorial policies that respect individual privacy and freedom of expression where the code states to professionalism, which means fair, accurate and balanced reporting.

Journalistic ethics were not really a topic for debate during South Africa's apartheid era, until the freedom of press was enshrined in South Africa's post-apartheid constitution. Since then, a number of high profile ethical gaffes have shaken the profession, fuelling debate about the greater need for responsible journalism that comes with greater freedom.

IPI in focus: Turkey's proposed Penal Code raises concerns

Article Abstract:

IPI (International Press) highlighted repressive provisions within Turkey's new Penal Code (TCK) that threatened press freedom. The proposed law contained provisions to punish journalists with prison sentences for their work, as well as vague wording that make it easier for the authorities to suppress the press.
