Personalized printing for less

Article Abstract:

Variable-data printing (VPR) enables templated page layouts to be merged with a variety of custom page elements. The technology is similar to a word processor's mail merge capabilities, but enables the development of individualized brochures, catalogs and direct-mail marketing pieces that target individuals. VPR has been expensive, but new VPR applications that bring this technology to the desktop for reasonable prices are reaching the market. Currently available VPR products include Scitex's $995 Darwin Desktop 2.0; EM Software's $300 Xdata; Meadows Information Systems' $595 DataMerge XTension and Atlas Software's $1,395 PrintShop Mail.

Wireless wunderkind

Article Abstract:

Three developers are profiled who are already building infrastructure and creating applications for a market that is only now beginning to materialize: Rama Aysola, founder and CEO of Airflash; Todd Girvin, VP of product development at Roku Technologies; and Thor Gunnarsson, VP of corporate development at OZ.COM. Aysola is betting on a timely, location-sensitive service called SmartZone. Girvin says business customers need information to be standardized and presented in a consistent manner. Gunnarsson says Web-enabled mobile devices will permit members of Internet communities to take their communities with them wherever they go.

Magazine design in the Web

Article Abstract:

The role of the magzaine art director is changing, being impacted by competition from the Web and by magzines' own efforts to establish an online presence. Three examples are discussed, which are Business 2.0, PC World and Brill's Content, whose creative directors are Laura Morris, Robert Kanes and Luke Hayman, respectively. The lesson might be that there will continue to be a place for magazines, which should not try to closely mimic their Web counterparts.
