The grunge look has entered typography and has made a major impact on style and design. It is possible to transform a standard font into a grunge font with existing graphic design software and a few plug-ins. Fractal Design Painter offers plenty of special effects for making type intentionally ugly. Its Express Texture feature can produce amazing effects, such astext that looks like it has been photocopied too many times. The first step is to open the image over which the grunge headline will appear. Because the type can take the form of a shape, it can be manipulated in the same way as any object. The type shapes must be converted into floaters, and the grunge effect can be enhanced by turning off kerning to achieve random spacing. By softening the mask around the edges, the overphotocopied effect can be achieved.

Other problems involve inexperienced publishers working with Windows-based graphics software, the increasing ubiquity of color inkjet printers, which cannot be checked with proofs designed for laser printers, and unrealistic expectations fostered by increasing reliance on the Web as a graphics platform.
