A place for your stuff

Article Abstract:

Managing data generated by enterprises is becoming an increasingly technical, burdonsome task. Moreover, employees with Storage Area Network (SAN) skills are increasingly difficult to find. A solution to this problem is emerging in the form of companies that offer outsourced management of data storage. Such an arrangement is particularly attractive to dotcom startups that must have reliable access to their information on a 24/7, 365-day-per-year basis. An industry exec says storage on demand frees companies to focus on their core businesses rather than worrying about complex computer tasks. Costs for storage currently range from $25,000 to $100,000 per terabyte per month.

Private I: Do personalization tactics rob consumers of control?

Article Abstract:

Personalization and privacy exist in an uneasy relationship on the Internet. An example is provided by the 1999 controversy concerning RealNetworks' RealJukebox product, which contained a unique serial number known as a globally unique identifier (GUID). RealNetworks says the technology was only used for statistical purposes and was never linked to personal details, but even so, GUIDs were taken out of RealJukebox. RealNetworks' experience illustrates how important it is for an online company to maintain its customers' trust.

Winning customer approval

Article Abstract:

Managing an effective e-mail marketing campaign not only involves targeting an appropriate audience but also making sure the audience accepts being targeted. Marketers should send their messages to consumers who opt to receive them. Differenting legitimate e-mail messages from unsolicited, unwanted ones is easier said than done, but e-mail can be personalized and made effectively relevant.
