The designer is also the product

Article Abstract:

Designers should know how to market themselves in addition to focusing on their art. Usually this information is not taught sufficiently in design school, so it must be learned in the marketplace itself. Many designers learn from people already in the business who are willing to share their expertise. Entering competitions is one of the best ways for designers to have their work seen. The recognition that can come through these competitions is well worth the time and expense involved. Writing articles for design publications and speaking before groups of designers and others are also ways of becoming known.

The art kite project

Article Abstract:

International artists gathered at Japan's Himeji castle in 1989 for an art exhibition and kite flying event. The exhibition drew 100 artists from 20 countries, 50,000 spectators and 100 professional kite flyers and makers. The Art Kite Project originated in 1987, when 100 artists from around the world painted or designed kites on Japanese washi paper. The resulting works of art were crafted into kites for the competition and flown by both the artists and the few kite artisans left in Japan.

Article Abstract:

More than 5,000 entries were submitted for the American Institute of Graphic Arts' 1990/1991 Communication Graphics Show. The 446 works selected for presentation concentrated on both message and execution. The styles were usually not opulent but they were varied and had no dominant approach. Some of the selections chosen for the show are presented.
