Typecasting for the PC - bit parts

Article Abstract:

Fonts for the PC continue to play a limited role. The problem has involved the fonts themselves, as well as the environment in which they are used. Apple's Macintosh uses Apple's Laserwriter, which is a true desktop typesetter; but PC developments have centered on Hewlett-Packard's Laserjet, which was designed for word processing and the office. Moreover, outline fonts, such as are used by PostScript, require much less memory and storage space than bit-mapped fonts; bit-mapping, which can be adequate for jobs that use the same few typefaces in only a few point sizes, quickly encounters memory limitations when jobs become complex. Bit-mapped fonts are discussed. Bit-mapped fonts are 'a relic technology'; however, if they must be used, they can be used effectively.

PCs speaking Appletalk: PSprint, WINPRINT PostScript printing utilities

Article Abstract:

The Winprint 1.0 ($79) utility program and the PSprint 1.1 ($150) utility program from Tangent Technologies are printing utilities that allow microcomputer users to gain access to PostScript printers. Each program requires the PC Macbridge expansion board from Tangent. Winprint is ideal for use with the PC Pagemaker program; the utility is able to facilitate print speed if the user does not use Windows' spooler. PSprint is useful when the PostScript printer cannot be used with PostScript. The products require 256Kbytes (384Kbytes are recommended) and DOS 2.1 or later.
