A heated interest in biomass power

Article Abstract:

The UK government's Non Fossil Fuel Obligation is aimed at supporting alternative energy projects. One of its projects is the Arable Biomass Renewable Energy project at Eggborough, North Yorkshire, led by Yorkshire Water in conjunction with Sweden's TPS and Royal Schelde Group of the Netherlands. The plant will use wood chips from coppiced trees to generate 10 MW of electricity. Meanwhile, Europe's first biomass-fuelled heat and power plant is under development in Norther Ireland, where coppiced willow will provide 100 KW of electricity via gasification.

Rage over right to roam

Article Abstract:

The UK government's decision to introduce a statutory right to roam for walkers has attracted considerable controversy. The Country Landowners Association believes that this decision goes strongly against the feelings of residents of rural areas. This organization feels that private landowners and the taxpayer will bear the real costs of this legislation, and that the government is wrong to state that there is no justification for compensation.
