Interest rate rise displeases agents

Article Abstract:

UK interest rates were raised in Feb 1995, which is likely to have an impact on those connected to the UK real estate industry, including the construction industry and mortgage lenders. Real estate agents are seeking measures to help the industry and promote the purchase of homes. Measures sought include an abandonment of changes reducing tax benefits to mortgage holders, and increased tax benefits for people buying their first homes. Rates of interest for mortgages may not be raised in line with the Feb 1995 rise.

'Boom and bust' property cycles

Article Abstract:

The property industry is extremely susceptible to cyclical developments, with property cycles generally following an irregular path. The most recent property cycle has been characterised by a very severe downturn, reflecting the speculative nature of the property boom in the 1980s. Property cycles are inevitable, but latest analytical techniques at least make it easier to predict future market behaviour.
