AXA regroups for European assault

The fast and erratic growth of investment and property firm AXA has left the firm with many different operations throughout Europe, with no direct leadership and operational style. The job of unifying AXA's real estate operations has fallen to Donald Brydon, who believes the strength of AXA lies in its ability to manage finance and property in an effective and profitable manner.

Article Abstract:

Evans, the property company which specializes in commercial property development in Northern England, has made an estimated pre-tax profit of 12 million pounds sterling for 1997. Chief Executive John Bell controls a portfolio of 271 million pounds sterling which supplies rents valued at 26 million pounds sterling. Some 40% of the rents are raised from commercial properties while only 12% comes from the retail sector. Bell is planning to increase the amount leisure and retail property owned by the company, and is also planning to develop part of a 2,000 acre site in Leeds, England.

Jonathan Lane is the managing director of Shaftsbury, in London, UK, a company he set up in 1986 with Peter Levy. Shaftsbury focuses on regenerating older properties and areas in London, England. The company has interests worth 230 million pounds sterling, mostly in the city's west end which attracts many tourists. The company is currently planning to revitalize Carnaby Street by encouraging more shops and restaurants into the area. Lane is also a director of the Crafts Council and the Theatres Trust, having successfully resolved problems they were having with accommodation.
