Analysis of Trends in the Antiquities Market through Graphic Portrayal and Sales Data Compilation

Article Abstract:

Expressing in computer language sales of one of a kind objects has proven problematic. A method is suggested for coding comparable information on computers. Art investments are often equated to financial investments of late. Sotheby Parke Bernet, Incorporated published a price indicator index for fine arts and antiques in 1981. The index has regular updates and deals with a dozen areas of the art market. The index has engendered negative response because it lacks quality assessments. Sotheby's index methodology is analyzed. Basically, Sotheby uses thirty items to illustrate each category. The index is not based on actual auction prices, but on reappraisals in accordance with current sales and market trends. Graphs of the market are illustrated so that their advantages and disadvantages become clearer. Using such graphs could be futile if one did not fully comprehend qualitative data for relevant sales. A technique for data compilation is proposed, as is a rating system for items' quality. If such methodology were applied to a larger segment of fine arts its cost effectiveness would grow, making possible a central terminal for international data input.

Trends in the budget and economy segments of the U.S. lodging industry

Article Abstract:

An overview of the present and projected trends in the budget and economy segments of the US lodging industry is presented. Construction of new hotels is occurring at a moderate rate resulting in supply growth that is projected to surpass demand growth. It is forecast that by 1999, it will no longer be feasible to build hotels in the economy segment because the per-room construction cost may exceed the per-room value.
