Auction gain upside from the downturn

Article Abstract:

Auctioneers point out selling a residential property by auction allows for a quick sale and access to a large number of purchasers. Many of the public still believe property is sold at auction because the seller is unable to dispose of it elsewhere. Poor property will not sell at auction unless it has a low reserve. Some 50% of residential sales at auctions are repossessed properties. The number of repossessions, in the UK, increased by 9.6% during Jan-Jun 1998 compared to the previous six months.

The UK county of Surrey is required to to provide 35,000 new homes by 2006 and developers are calling for the release of green belt areas to build new housing developments. Surrey's green belt accounts for 70% of the county. Local residents and environmentalists are opposed to building on green belt, however the location and environment are the two reasons why people want to live in Surrey, increasing the need for new housing.
