Automation as a Competitive Weapon

Article Abstract:

The financial services industry has become as highly competitive as any business in the nation today. In responding to the pressures of competition banks and financial institutions have rushed to automate operations hoping to attain a competitive edge. Unfortunately, many firms, if not the whole industry, have been so intent upon edging out the competition that they have no clear idea of where they hope to go with automation. Each firm must evaluate the benefits to be gained by further automation, determine what benefits best fit overall company strategy; then make an informed decision about the implementation and timing of further automation.

Mandated interventions with drug-dependent pregnant women

Article Abstract:

Debate continues over whether or not to use legal interventions with a small number of women who refuse or are unable to reduce their consumption of substances harmful to developing fetuses during pregnancy. Strong arguments have been advanced for and against state intervention in the case of this particular group of pregnant women. Social science research has a clear, significant role in the ongoing controversy regarding this issue as many of the arguments that have been advanced for and against state intervention are based on assumptions that have not been empirically tested.

Reclaiming the sacred

Article Abstract:

Starhawk, a feminist restorer of Goddess traditions, believes that spirituality is closely connected with politics. Her fascination with feminism started with her exposure to the Goddess tradition espoused by the Wicca movement. Starhawk challenges the patriarchal view of religion and calls for the need to cultivate a personal link with the earth. She has joined women's rituals to express the importance of women's groups in treating the present from the past's system.
