Costly brew

Article Abstract:

Rising prices in Sri Lanka's tea industry indicate that the government must take steps to balance economic growth. The government has announced a 30% wage increase for public-sector workers, and abolished export and sales tax for state-owned plantations. The industry, however, wants more export incentives and assistance such as subsidies for re-planting with high-yielding clones. In spite of high interest rates and almost unchanging budget and trade deficits, sufficient foreign reserves and the depreciating rupee should enable the government to control inflation.

Balancing act: arbitration is about objectively assessing the arguments on both sides of a dispute. The 1996 Arbitration Act now strengthens its role

Article Abstract:

Arbitration aims to break deadlock in a quick and cost effective way and ingredients essential to arbitration proceedings include a written agreement referring the dispute to arbitration, and procedure to appoint an arbitrator. Arbitration agreements must be written under the Arbitration Act 1996 and arbitration can be decided purely on the basis of such written representations. The 1996 Act fills in gaps in procedures to be followed in arbitration agreements.

When naptime is over: the placid public mood is an illusion. Real issues rumble beneath the calm and could soon send a wake-up call

Article Abstract:

Politicians and journalists decry lack of public participation in debating issues. The apathy is a mirage caused by current economic prosperity. The same serious social and political issues from earlier generations will be heard from again quickly when the economy cycles downward.
