Balancing the good news with the bad

Article Abstract:

The West Country's manufacturing industries have seen strong growth over recent years, with some sectors now operating at full capacity. However, the prospects for the region's traditional industries, such as fishing and tourism, remain bleak. Most commercial activity is being generated by smaller companies, with 90% of firms in the region employing less than 100 people. Some towns, including Yeovil and Taunton, have become strong centres, but there are still problems with road access to the region.

Down by the river

Article Abstract:

Residential and commercial land is much in demand in Somerset, UK, as retailers, leisure operators and housebuilders develop sites. The town centre of Taunton, Somerset appears to have benefited from the opening of a retail park, which allows easy access for both town users and shoppers traveling by road. The housing requirement of Taunton is expected to increase to 12,900 units in 2001 from 10,000 in 1998, increasing the pressure for land from local house builders.

It's good to talk

Article Abstract:

Laganside Corporation is responsible for urban development in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It controls 120 acres, much of which is owned by Belfast Harbour Commissioners, the city council or private owners. This has damaged its ability to encourage private sector development, and it has also been hampered by its lack of planning powers. However, it has had a number of successes, especially as it has access to European Union funds.
