Beware of the banker's folly

Article Abstract:

The increasing number of bank mergers, in the UK, will reduce competition. It may also lead to the management of the new larger company not being as successful as the separate companies, prior to merger. Within a large banking organisation its willingness to help individual creditors is likely to be diminished. Creditors may find their debts spread throughout the company and therefore managed by people who have little knowledge or understanding of their business. Mergers between banks and other financial institutions may not result in a better service for their customers.

Asia's loss is UK's gain

Article Abstract:

Asia is an important market for European exports and the Asian economic crisis has helped to keep inflation low in the West and also resulted in deflation in Asia. This is beneficial for fixed-interest bonds. The IMF has been quick to offer financial aid to Asia to avert the crisis affecting the world economy. Japan's banks are in crisis and the economy faces deflation, while China's economy is threatened by currency devaluations in other Asian countries. Devaluation of the yuan will also fuel deflation in the West.
