Big brother knows best

Article Abstract:

Closed circuit television (CCTV) is being used in shopping centres and car parks to increase security, deter thieves and muggers, and make shoppers feel safer. Crime in a main shopping centre in Liverpool, UK, has dropped by 20% since CCTV was installed. CCTV is endorsed by shop keepers and local authorities, and Oxford Street, London, UK, is to install 35 colour cameras by January 1998. The cost of the cameras is being met by a grant of 135,000 pounds sterling from the government, 100,000 pounds sterling from the city council and 255,500 pounds sterling from retailers in the area.
