Born-again builders

Article Abstract:

Countryside Properties is beginning to use its greenfield 'garden village' concept for brownfield sites such as the Millennium Village development in Greenwich, London, England. It has undertaken a range of speculative housing development since the housing market declined in the early 1990s, but has also been involved in refurbishing housing estates for local councils. It now develops 50% of its houses in brownfield sites, but is also still committed to its core business of family homes.

Minister eyes REITs funding

Article Abstract:

The UK government may seek to attract institutional investment to the private-rented housing sector by introducing real estate investment trusts (REITs). FDPSavills estimates that 70 billion pounds sterling will be needed by 2016 to boost the private-rented sector. However, some observers have expressed doubts about whether REITs, which do not pay corporation tax as long as they distribute 95% of their net income to shareholders as dividends, are the most appropriate vehicle.

RICS rejects idea to help stop gazumping

Article Abstract:

Conditional contracts are not the most appropriate way to speed up the house buying process in the UK, according to the RICS. This organization feels that the majority of buyers and sellers would not be willing to enter into a contract at an earlier stage in the house buying process. This view contrasts with that of a government report which indicates that gazumping would cease to be a problem if the vendor was obliged to enter into a contract agreement.
