Browned off

Article Abstract:

Some observers suggest demands made by the UK Environmental Agency (EA) over cleaning contaminated land will increase costs for developers to such as degree it will be a tax on urban renewal work. Many developers have criticised the variation in guidelines offered by the eight different EAs. Some developers accuse the EA of delaying work on contaminated land by undertaking long negotiations and the submission of extensive documentation, even on land which is hardly contaminated. British Gas has been asked to spend 12 million pounds sterling on a site it had previously cleaned.

Beware of retail scaremongering

Article Abstract:

CB Hillier Parker's report on out-of-town retail development did not find certain proof town centres were damaged by new superstores being built on their outskirts. Two out of the eight areas studied showed a decline in market share. Although in Leominster, England, the town centre had faced a 30% reduction in business some town centre shops were responding well to the competition. The UK government have been using the report as evidence to support their stance on cutting out-of-town retail development. The report was commissioned by the UK Office of Fair Trading.

Maintaining support for renewable energy

Article Abstract:

Renewable energy includes wind power and incineration of garbage, and concern over the environmental impact of such schemes is affecting the future of renewable energy in the UK. A report by Catherine Mitchell commissioned by the UK Council for the Protection of Rural England calls for national guidelines and a clearer process of assessment of environmental factors involved in renewable energy projects. Public support is needed for such projects, the report stresses.
