Capital attractions

Article Abstract:

Despite the resumption of the IRA bombing campaign in London, the city is expected to remain a world financial centre. However, while property is the main target of terrorism, the crucial problem for the capital is how it is perceived by foreign investors. A recent study shows that the nature of such investment is gradually changing from manufacturing to services, particularly finance and insurance. The provision of amenities for business people is a key element in attracting inward investment.

Maintaining the competitive edge

Article Abstract:

It is widely claimed that UK manufacturing companies are in a very weak position. It is true that the number of people employed in manufacturing has dropped over recent years, and this trend is likely to continue. However, it is misguided to claim that UK manufacturing industry will die out altogether. Present negative views on the future of the industry should merely be seen as part of a long-standing British preoccupation with industrial decline.

Over-the-counter financial products

Article Abstract:

There have been wide-reaching changes in the retail finance industry in the UK over recent years. Building societies have become takeover targets for banks, and companies not previously associated with financial services, such as Marks and Spencer, have started offering products such as life assurance. These trends are likely to lead to concentration in the financial services industry, with only the strongest players surviving.
