Clear the way for major sites

Article Abstract:

The new version of the UK Planning Policy Guidance Note 2 permits some development on green belt sites. The UK government has been criticised for not giving adequate information regarding permissible development of green belt sites. The policy refers to major sites without given a clear definition which has led to inconsistency in decisions made by the local authorities. The authorities are using differing criteria for deciding whether to give planning permission on green belt sites. Local plans are required to include areas which could be used as major developed sites.

Build on brownland teams-up

Article Abstract:

A study looking into the availability of brownfield sites suitable for development concluded compulsory purchase should only be used rarely. Urban partnership zones should be established to ensure brownfield sites were developed by finding partners, such as housing associations, for land owners. Owners who did not want to redevelop their land would receive compensation payments. Some 155 land owners took part in the study. The UK government has proposed some 60% of new houses should be built on brownfield land by 2008.
