Coping with technophobia

Article Abstract:

Some surveyors in the United Kingdom feel threatened by the growing use of information technology (IT), while others believe they have no choice but to accept and understand the technology. Some surveyors already use the Internet information superhighway and claim this improves client service as they can call up detailed and timely information. Use of technology enhances communication and access is available 24 hours a day. Some surveyors believe their skills lie in correctly evaluating the information provided by technology. IT also allows smaller companies to compete with larger firms.

Into uncharted territory

Article Abstract:

A retiring surveyor presents his views about the current state of the UK surveying industry. His expectation that there will be fewer but better trained surveyors in the future is discussed, including the likely impact of this development on the way in which clients see the relationship between surveyors' fees and the advantages they bring the client. The need to retain a local flavour in UK surveying practice is highlighted, and likely developments relating to the movement and sharing of information are considered.

Swamped, bit by bit

Article Abstract:

The US real estate industry has a vast amount of computerised information at its disposal, ranging from a variety of limited access databases; to listings and sales/lease data on the Internet. It is estimated that a real estate national adviser/servie provider might spend $350,000 on limited access database information, without including on-line time. The implications of computerised data on the real estate industry are discussed.
