Developers adapt to a change of rules

Article Abstract:

The distribution industry has traditionally focused on the English Midlands, with its good road access to the rest of Britain, as the centre of its activity, but prime distribution space in the region is fast depleting. However, recent European Union legislation governing driver hours and speed limits, together with new carbon taxes and the UK government's proposals for motorway tolls, have encouraged distribution companies to move their activities southwards. New distribution hubs in Kettering and Milton Keynes are attracting developers, encouraged by the improved raod links with the rest of the UK and their proximity to the Channel Tunnel.

In the shadow of the superpowers

Article Abstract:

Smaller towns in Sussex are struggling against the popular areas of Brighton and Crawley for a larger share in the property market. Horsham is losing business to Crawley because of its good communications, although its retail industry is doing well because it attracts shoppers from the less attractive Crawley. East Grinstead is suffering due to bad road congestion, and in contrast Haywards Heath has a fast train line to London, and its rents remain fairly stable.
