Downsize but don't demoralise

Article Abstract:

Some 225,000 UK workers were made redundant between Feb 1996-Feb 1997. Companies sometimes make their employees redundant to reduce costs and then rehire new employees when finances improve. Many dismiss workers who have had the least time in the company and therefore often avoid redundancy payments. Employers are required to make consultations if the number of workers they are planning to make redundant exceeds 20. Redundancy can be prevented, in some cases, by retraining workers and through natural wastage. When workers are being made redundant those left often feel demotivated.

A bigger splash

Article Abstract:

Stax Properties Founder Max Wildsmith has also built up a chain of six leisure outlets called Racquets and Healthtrack. Wildsmith suggests his company's success at finding good property is due to familiarly of the area, around Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire and a well organised approach to planning. Wildsmith and his partner Graham Thomas are looking to expand their leisure outlets into London. Wildsmith predicts Racquets and Healthtrack will make a 7-8 million pounds sterling profit in 1999. He prefers to leave development work to others but enjoys making deals.
