Driven industry

Article Abstract:

Industry observers suggest the demand for car component manufacturing factories near the location of their main customers is not being satisfied. Speculative development is unable to keep up with demand. Many of the large motor manufacturers want their main component companies nearby. They have often formed an alliance with each other. Some car manufacturing firms are considering using the railways for transporting their cars. Both Ford and BMW are investing in refurbishing and expanding their plants in the UK. Industry observers suggest only the six largest car firms will survive.

Limits to expansion

Article Abstract:

The BMW site at Cowley. Oxford, England, has undergone some redevelopment work in order to manufacturer the Rover R75 car. The cost of developing the new car and work at Cowley was about 700 million pounds sterling. Automobile supply companies are tending to move nearer production sites to reduce delivery times. Suppliers wanting to serve the BMW plant at Cowley were limited by lack of space, with some already opening outlets within the Cowley site. BMW plan to make no fewer than 100,000 cars each year, at Cowley.
