Article Abstract:

The five counties which make up the East Midlands region of England have a total workforce of over 2 million, and 27% of this number are employed in manufacturing. The clothing, textile and shoe-making industries continue to be significant employers, but these industries are declining. Unemployment throughout the region is slightly below the national average at 7.4%. Inward investment is important in the area's economy with 12 foreign companies investing heavily in the East Midlands in 1995-96. The area's location in the centre of the country and its motorway network is a major attraction.
