Fear of heights

Article Abstract:

The retail industry in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, is facing competition for outlets with operators, such as wine bars. The Grainger Town regeneration scheme is a particularly fashionable site for public houses. Newcastle is know as an important shopping area and offers a wide range of shops. The MetroCentre is proving a popular shopping centre for customers. Local agents warn the increasing rents for prime sites may exclude some retail operators. Rental value of outlets in zone A have reached 300 pounds sterling per sq ft. There is much less demand for stores outside the centre.

Retail/leisure survey results

Article Abstract:

Some 30% of retailers questioned believed that the Tyne and Wear, England, had too many shops. The Mar 1997 Estates Gazette survey questioned 100 major retail and leisure companies in the UK with outlets in the North East. Some 59% of companies which operate leisure facilities in Newcastle, England, felt that local licensing regulations had stopped them expanding their businesses. Around 51% of respondents had experienced criminal activity on their premises during 1996-1997. Many felt that the installation of security cameras and the presence of uniformed police would help deter criminals.

Chain reaction

Article Abstract:

Retail organisations are experiencing stiff competition for popular high street and out-of-town locations and some organisations such as Powerhouse and Sketchley have been sold off because they cannot perform well enough to justify their existence. Surviving retail companies are concentrating on reducing costs and increasing profits. Retail demand is equally balanced between top high street locations and out-of-town parks.
