Irish prospectors join UK gold rush

Article Abstract:

High yields on UK property are attracting overseas investors, particularly the wealthy business people created by Ireland's healthy economy. Irish investors currently account for 7% of overseas investment in UK property. Statistics suggest that Irish involvement in the UK property market amounted to 303 million pounds sterling in 1998 and that private investment accounted for a third of property purchases in the UK in the first quarter of 1999. The involvement of these new investors has implications for the UK property market.

PFI hits the big time: the government's determination to sell off its office estate has failed to inspire developers so far

Article Abstract:

The first private finance initiative contract relating to the DSS' Newcastle headquarters, has been awarded to Amec. There are delays to the sale of the MD married quarters estate, but contracts are due to be signed on the Customs & Excise office in Southampton and the Inland Revenue's office in Manchester. Each of the schemes will be awarded to only a few contractors as the government has failed to convince developers that PFI is worthwhile.
