Legal tender

Article Abstract:

The shortage of experienced solicitors in the UK to deal with a rise in demand from construction and development clients is leading to an increase in solicitors' salaries, particularly in London, England. It is inevitable that law firms will in turn raise fees for construction and development clients. Some purchasers of legal services are already using the larger regional practices, rather than London firms, and this has led several regional firms to expand their property departments. However, leading London law firms believe that the cost advantage of going to the regions has been exaggerated.

A hard bargainer

Article Abstract:

Linklaters Lawyer and Head of Property Robert Finch confirms larger law firms are more likely to survive an economic decline because they can be more flexible. He points out a number of clients based in the UK want to work with only one company therefore the firm has to have sufficiently qualified staff to offer a complete service. Linklaters has been looking for a European partner which will also help them expand into Latin America. Finch moved to Linklaters in 1969, after training to be a lawyer in his uncle's law firm. He is well-known for his strong negotiating skills.
