Northern Forest Act paves for major land acquisition

Article Abstract:

The Northern Forest Stewardship Act may be used as a way for states to get lands from private owners. The Act also gives landowners greater tax burdens and widens the gap between private and public land ownerships. It forces landowners having difficulty paying their taxes to give up their lands to the federal or the state government. Further, the Act threatens the economic viability of the community in affected areas since it stops the supply of timber to Northeastern paper mills and other industries.

Mediating land use disputes

Article Abstract:

A handful of state statutes can help parties in dispute over land use arbitrate a solution. Such statues found in zoning laws, housing laws, environmental regulations, and growth management acts, offer the legal grounds to pursue a process of mediation. The statutes require due process at public hearings and open, accessible government meetings. Mediation may be used to resolve issues such as hazardous material cleanup and growth management.
