Open at the edges

Article Abstract:

The demand for office space in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, is high due to lack of suitable accommodation, with many of the available buildings unsuitable for modern business needs. The Quayside was developed at a cost of 170 million pounds sterling on a site 15 minutes away for the city centre. It is very popular with occupiers as it offers modern facilities and leisure outlets within the same development. Business parks on the outskirts of the city centre are also popular with occupiers. Some smaller refurbishment schemes of listed building are going ahead in the city centre.

The market for residential properties is buoyant, with new properties particularly popular. The area has few empty offices to meet the rising demand. Rents for South Quay had reached 25 pounds sterling per sq ft at the end of 1999 from 12.50-13 pounds sterling per sq ft at the beginning of the year. Local property agents anticipate some speculative development will go ahead.
