Open door to development

Article Abstract:

There is some concern a new 425,000 sq ft shopping centre planned for the High Street in Croydon, England, will take customers away for the Whitgift Centre. A planned redevelopment of office space on Wellesley Road is unlikely to go ahead. Developers have applied for permission to build a hotel and restaurant on the site because demand for offices is low. The 200 million pounds sterling redevelopment of 7.7 acre site in East Croydon has yet to be agreed. If permission in obtained the site will include a variety of leisure outlets, a hotel, parking facilities and residential apartments.

The plot thickens

Article Abstract:

The planning authority in Norwich, England, is considering several proposed leisure schemes which will increase the number of cinemas in the area to six. Other schemes waiting approval include the construction of a health club, casino and several restaurants for the Chapelfields area of the city. Some observers fear that increased competition may cause existing facilities to cease trading. The retail centre, Castle Mall is 90% occupied with further deals undergoing discussion. Castle Mall is also the preferred site for a new eight-screen cinema.
