Prepare for turbulence

Article Abstract:

The unregulated activities of sections of the UK banking industry may lead to financial collapse in the late 1990s. The banks are making loans on the supposition that property values will continually increase. A similar situation occurred in the 1970s and lead to a severe financial crisis in the UK. The Financier James Goldsmith, who died in Jul 1997, managed to survive the crisis of 1970s by not over expanding his banking operation, his perceptive financial management and constant funding from Cavenham, his food company. Banking regulation is being reviewed by the UK government.

Next step the lifeboat

Article Abstract:

The financial markets in the UK and US have been experiencing some difficulties partly due to speculation on hedge funds. Hedge fund dealing is kept secret and has not been well regulated. Banks do not always act prudently when faced with clients who seem to have good credentials. Lack of control contributed to the financial difficulties of Long-Term Capital Management, with exposures valued at $200 billion on capital of under $5 billion. The 1970s property lending crisis bears some resemblance to the financial problems caused by hedge funds in late 1990s.

Tories banking on the Budget

Article Abstract:

UK employees in financial services companies are feeling insecure about their jobs, as has been the case for manufacturing employees and those employed in privatised industries. Shareholders are ebenfiting and they include pension funds which will have to find cash for redundancy payments. Services do not improve as a result of redundancies. Older people tend to lose their jobs and cannot easily find work elsewhere. Demand for mortgages is low due to high personal debt levels. These developments aid the UK Labor Party.
