Schemes sidetracked

Article Abstract:

Railtrack's plans to spend 120 million pounds sterling on property development schemes has been put in abeyance since the Labour government came to power in May 1997. Plans to spend 1 billion pounds sterling on the renovation of four of the 14 major stations is likely to go ahead. Sales of property in 1997 is predicted to make a profit of 35 million pounds sterling. The outcome of a windfall tax on Railtrack is unknown and government authorities have promised to invest any profits from Railtrack's property development schemes back into the railway.

Is the MOD sell-off going off half-cocked?: the successful bidder in the government's latest money-making scheme could be the recipient of a political hot potato

Article Abstract:

The possible sale of the MOD housing estate to John Beckwith caused furore amongst Tory backbenchers and the Opposition, along with army wives who fear eviction, rising rents and ruthless foreign landlords. There is much foreign interest and all bids involve foreign funds. The bid by Japanese bank Nomura is considered sensitive and British partner Amec has recently won a PFI contract. ING of the Netherlands has the financial strength and experience but lacks a British partner.
