Star player takes cameo role

Article Abstract:

Peter Beckwith, property developer and theatre owner, says his success is built on his combination of business pragmatism and emotional commitment. While other millionaires have gone into tax exile, Beckwith has stayed in London, where he runs his property business PMB Holdings. Beckwith is involved in both commercial and commercial property schemes, and has a healthclub chain, Harbour Clubs, which he is developing in Europe. He has also established a charitable trust which pays for 11 students from state schools to attend his old school Harrow.

Article Abstract:

Theatres Trust Director Peter Longman points out the Trust tries to preserve the best examples of old theatres, in the UK. It also has a brief to try to restore some of the theatres, so they can be used once again. The Trust had the important role in overseeing some 123 planning applications, in 1997. The Theatres Trust was established in 1976, it receives a grant from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, of 55,000 pound sterling each year. It also acts as an advisory group for theatres receiving lottery funding.

Article Abstract:

Many property developer chairman find it hard to give up a controlling interest in a firm which they may started from scratch. Sometimes shareholders may decide when a chairman should retire, with the UK law requiring a director's age be made public after 70. The Association of British Insurers would like to see older directors taking up non-executive functions while still being able to pass on experience gained over many years.
