The main retail area of Edinburgh, Scotland, is Princes Street, but it lacks appeal and friendliness and shoppers prefer Glasgow. Retailers are also limited by a lack of space and planning regulations and have turned to out of town developments.

Issues concerning development plans for the office market of Basingstoke, United Kingdom, are discussed. Particular attention is given to concerns over the sustainability of the new office developments to be opened in the town in 2003.
