Summer turnaround

Article Abstract:

The retail market in Crawley, Sussex, England, has been assisted by the renovation of The Martlets shopping centre, with rents achieving up to 125 pounds sterling per sq ft. Some local agents suggested Crawley was not being considered as a good site for office space because occupiers mistakenly felt they would not be able to reach the M25 easily. The office market in Crawley has been given a boost with the arrival of the Povidian Bank and CableData International. Demand for space has risen, with some 100,000 sq ft occupied since the summer 1999. Some 215,000 sq ft of space was vacant in Jul 1999.

Retail e-volution

Article Abstract:

Some industry observers suggest shopping via the Internet will not replace high street shops, as most customers wish to examine goods prior to purchase. Others point out many retailers are still investing in very large outlets. It is estimated shopping by the Internet will be worth some 6.1 billion pounds sterling by 2003. It is recognized electronic shopping allows ease of access but some industry experts remain unsure if consumers will use the technology. Many more shops are becoming available on the Internet. Electronic shopping accounted for 0.2% of retail sales in 1999.

Smitten by those Irish eyes

Article Abstract:

Many top mainland British retailers, especially supermarket chains, are now looking to establish a strong presence in Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. They are attracted by economic growth, the subsidence in terrorist violence and the rise in average household expenditure. Burton Group, for example, is to open a Debenhams department store in the Irish Republic, while Sainsbury's plans to open stores in Northern Ireland and Tesco is to open a Metro outlet in Belfast's Royal Avenue.
